i use the primos orange and black crow call. it sounds pretty good but was gonna see what yall favored
I got a new custom Hook's Harrison crow call for this spring. It looks great and is as real sounding as I've heard, and boy is it loud!
I have been told that the hooks is really loud
Unlike alot of people a crow call is a huge part of my hunting style.. I have found two crow calls in my life that worked 80% of the time.. When Scott sent me the Harrison I though No way could it replace the one I had that worked so well..
Well its what I carry now, it worked as well as the former one that I went through so many calls to find..
Its about volume and pitch

The Hooks call made by James Harrison is definitely loud and proud. Other good crow calls I have were made by Jack Mincey and Michael Buckner.
sounds like hooks is the way to go with everything!
To my experience, turkeys rarely shock gobble to crow calls. At least where I hunt they don't. Tons of crows, so I guess they are used to it? ??? I carry a crow call, but have never had any luck with it.

This was my first year with any experience with Hook's. I had read on here about how great their calls and customer service were and was wondering if they really were as good as advertised and decided to try them out. I wanted a new custom owl hooter and crow call to match so I called Hook's to see if they could work something out with me. While on the phone with me, Scott(the owner) called callmaker James Harrison to ask if he could make me a matching owl and crow call and he said it wouldn't be a problem. Maybe I got lucky he had some extra matching wood around to make my crow call, but I think that just goes to show they have their priorities set the right way. They didn't have to work anything out with me. They have a synthetic and osage wood owl and crow calls. It would have been easy for them to tell me that's all they had available and not worry about getting me a custom crow to match. The fact that they care enough about their customers to go out of their way to make them happy is why I will be a Hook's customer from now on. It's also why I spent some more to buy a slate, box, few mouth calls, and a hat too, whoops!
In short, yeah you can't go wrong with Hook's.
have primos power crow green ond the lohman gold series...x2 on not had much luck making a turkey gobble..
I have both, a Hooks crow and Michael Buckner crow call. Of the two I like the buckner call the best.

IME yes they are used to it.. A crow call that is tuned a touch higher and much louder "shocks" them into gobbling.. Numerous times I have had a crow blast next to me with nothing and hit a call tuned higher and louder and hear a gobble..
Hook's for locating turkeys, Jack Mincey for crow hunting.

Exactly right. This crow call is simply AMAZING for making one gobble. God bless.
Natural voice... An its loud too...
The Hooks is excellent for getting a shock Gobble. I also have a Buckner and it sounds great.
TRKYHTR
I have the primos power crow and like it.
So the Harrison crow call from Hooks is the one you guys are saying the turks gobble to?
Its hard to beat a crow call with set of wooden guts :icon_thumright:
I have not carried it hunting yet, but my hooks sounds great. Took the Woodhaven out and put the Hooks in.

I dont want to push a call on you, and cannot speak for your birds.. But Yes, in every state that I have hunted in, it has worked effectively.. If you have a crow call that works, it can be one of the most valuable tools in your arsenal..
But I will say their is no half azz blowing this thing.. Hammer Down.. I might be the only one but I hammer down so hard I have broke 2 reeds.. :TooFunny:

Is the one from hooks the synthetic crow call? and where can you contact Michael Buckner for a crow call? Thanks
I've always used an H.S. Strut Hammerin Crow. I would like to find a wooded one of some kind though.

If it were me I would opt for the synthetic for hunting, but either can be equally loud

That's what the birds at my club shock gobble to the best. And some old Primos crow call that T-town has
I thought crow calls were a waist of time, until i found one that worked!!the old one had one reed that did not adjust, then last season i tried my buddy's power crow, with a rubber mouth piece and had some good luck..i've had better luck waiting for a response when the woods are silent,no breeze, etc.
the old wood Lohman crow call i have used many others but this old wood call will make them gobble when others won't
We have so many dang crows around here you can't help but have them going crazy most mornings somewhere near by.
I love when it just starts getting light and they go to yelling about something.
Yes Hooks is awsome. Easy to master and very authentic. Closest thing I have ever hear to it is the old Lohman which I have one of those also. But the hooks is more authentic in my opinion.
my best crow call is a joe jaroski it sounds better than a real crow

Love mine!! Got a maple one to match my Hoot n Stick :z-flirtysmile3:
Hooks has a great crow call.
I have not tried the Hooks one.. but I like my Haydel Crow call it is tunable, it replaced the primos power crow for me about 4 years ago.. It makes em gobble when they don't want to. They key is getting that high pitch I think.

I have two custom crow callers. I have one from Michael Buckner and one from Darrel Gibson. Both sound great for making turkeys gobble. I do plan on tring one from Hooks.
I have an old Haydels that is tough to beat. Also blew a Gibson custom one time that was really good, just didnt have the money to pay for it.
Crow calls work well here in OK. When I wear my Quaker Boy crankin' crow out, it'll be a new Hooks call to replace her.

:agreed:
I have the Primos Orange and Black crow call as well. I bought it this past week and used it for messing around with some crows while squirrel hunting. I had crows coming in from every direction. I am sure a custom call would be better, but for the money it works.
I like how you can adjust the rasp of the call. I noticed that the crows that were circling over head all had different tones. I was able to mimic what I heard with that call.
I feel if you are looking for the best crow call it is foolish not to put Darrell Gibson's call at the top of your list. The other calls you have mentioned are all fine calls but Darrell has made the finest sounding crow calls for many years. Ask any good crow hunter and they will own a Gibson crow call. At the Grand National Callmaker's Contest 2011 Deadly Attraction Game Calls crow call won 1st and 5th in a contest containing many of the calls you have mentioned. So I feel that our crow call should be included in the list of best crow calls also. By the way Mr.Gibson taught me to build and tune a crow call once again affirming his spot at the top of the list.
Own a Gibson and it's a fine crow call, but I can make the Hook's sound as real as it gets. God bless.

Yup are we calling crows or making turkeys gobble..
I cant count the number of times I have had a real crow sound off, nothing, Hit the Harrison BOOM Gobble...

I've used that same Lohman crow call for as long as I can remember...haven't found one I like any better. I think it has more to do with the person using the call. You can't just blow into a crow call and expect to sound like a crow. It definitely takes some practice to sound realistic.
I have a couple gibson calls and they sound great, however for the money now the Faulk C-50 is one of the best sounding calls I have ever used and I have killed over a 100 crows last year using it, so if it lures the crows in for me it has to be good on locating for gobblers this spring!

Exactly. It's all about the volume and emotion you put into it. God bless.
Hooks! Plus it really looks cool when you have macthing owl hooter and crow call. Maple if you must know
I can't speak for the Hook's crow call, however my guess would be it's a very good, seems like those guys don't know how to make a bad call. But as far as sounding like a real crow, my buddy has a crow call from Bobby Vanover and that thing sounds absolutely amazing. I have not had much luck getting turkeys to shock gobble to a crow call in PA but when I was up in Ontario a few years back and when we'd get back to my buddy's house in the afternoon I'd hit a crow call from his deck and this bird would light up and it'd be on again, everyday he'd light up and make us chase him for a few hours. We never did kill that bird couldn't get him to break 60 yards. He got killed the next by a friend of my buddy's, 23 lbs, 1.25 and 1 3/8 spurs, 11.5 beard.
Haven't seen it listed but the Faulks C-50 can't be beaten.
As owner of Crowmart, co founder of CrowBusters and a long time crow hunter I will say that you can't find better custom calls than the ones Gibson and Mincey make. Gibsons have plastic mouthpieces; Minceys are wooden. Both are tuned properly and are very loud. As most of you know they are not going to sound like real crows if you blow them like party horns.
Now as a 48 year turkey hunter I wouldn't be out there without one of those two great sounding crow calls. A gobbler, when he takes a notion to, however will shock gobble at just about any loud . I'm sure the Hooks call sounds great and I look forward to hearing it. Good hunting to all this spring.
Yes, Mr.Gibson makes the BEST crow calls!! He made me a oak crow call and it look, sound awesome!! I will call him next week and order one more! Can't wait to talk to Mr.Gibson about my new call! He is a wonderful guy and a nice friend!!! A true custom call maker!! Thank, you Mr.Gibson :jesus-cross:
