Title: Can you tell subspecies from a picture?
Post by: cornfedkiller on March 25, 2012, 04:52:47 PM
Just as the title says..If I post a pic, can you tell me if its a pure or a hybrid?  The bird I shot last year looks like it has alot of merriam in it, but I shot it in east central nebraska, which isnt really known for merriams, so Im curious how I tell, or if anyone can help me out.

For what it's worth, I'd say it's 100% Merriams as well.

I don't know that this is comparing apples to apples, but I killed two Rios in Kansas that looked just like him. I thought I'd killed a Merriam's in Rio country but then a guy ask me if he had the irredecent coloring in the black bar of his fan. Mine didn't so he said it was a white phase Rio. Just an experience of mine, but it wasn't in an area with Merriam's or their hybrids anywhere close by.

It looks like a Merriam to me. There is some difference in color besides the tail coverts and the tail. The tip of the tail color(white/buff) is usually larger in  a Merriam than a Rio. Almost twice the size. The breast feathers and side feathers of a Merriam look Black with green iridescence and a Rio looks copper color in good sunlight. Its hard to tell with this picture but it just looks like a Merriam to me. Does the NWTF acknowledge it as being a Merriam species in that area? Or is it thought of as being hybrids? Pretty bird either way.
