Title: Federal TSS with Trulock TSS Chokes - UPDATE
Post by: BigPimpin on February 26, 2018, 07:29:03 PM
This is what I'm getting so far with the Trulock Federal TSS chokes and the 3.5" Federal TSS #7 and #9.  The #7 chokes are .650 and the #9 chokes are .640.

Benelli SV 28"
#7 (235 in the 10") 56%
#9 (364 in the 10") 45%

Stoger M3500 24"
#7 (233 in the 10") 56%
#9 (391 in the 10") 48%

I will shoot the Ber/Ben chokes in a 24" M1 with 3" #7 and #9 next weekend.  Still can't get my hands on any 20GA ammo, but have the chokes for an M2 on order.

I would like to add that the 3.5" kick like a mule.  Worse than any 3.5" shells I've ever shot, including Remington Hypersonic waterfowl loads.

Also, my buddy shot both 3.5" loads with IC .665 and it shot them well.

Contrary to the current internet experts, these constrictions weren't what I would consider over-choked for the loads.  No blown patterns.  No exploding barrels.

—————UPDATE—————

I tested 3" Federal TSS #7 and #9 with the .640 and .650 Trulock Federal TSS chokes today.

50 degrees, 40 yards measured.

Benelli M1 Super 90 Field 24" Barrel

#7 with .650 choke 179 in 10" (55%)
#9 with .640 choke 296 in 10" (47%)
#9 with .650 choke 298 in 10" (47%)

Shot the #9 shells with the #7 choke this time and it performed the same as with the #9 choke.  Makes me want to try that test with the two shotguns I tested last week.  Could mean that the #9 choke is unnecessary.  Don't want to jump to conclusion until I do some more shooting.

I shot the 3.5" #9's out of a jelly head .660 and kick's .665 and did not have nearly that kinda luck. Most are saying overchoked. Do you have the numbers from your buddy's IC .665? I think that's the closest to what I shot.

His M3500 did 351 with the #9 and 252 with the #7 (both 3.5").  He also sent a 2oz LB6 through that combo and got 245.  His patterns were nice and even all the way out and the nice thing about his set up is how he can shoot all three loads same POA/POI.  He's gonna run a TSS9 in the chamber with two TSS7 in the tube.  He will have 870/IC.665/FedTSS7/FedTSS9 data next weekend.

That's awesome. Where did you find the Trulock chokes? I can't find anywhere that has them.

I got them from Trulock.

I just went on their site and can't find them. How did you find the TSS chokes for the SV on their site? Thank you.

Look under Benelli Crio Plus... I only see the #7's choke, but they have .640 that should work too for 9's

Thank you. So you are referring to their models    PHCRP12650 and PHCRP12650P for the #7s? Or do you mean F7CRP12650 (the Trulock Federal #7)?

Sorry for these dumb questions, but given my noobness I have to be very careful that I am following correctly.

Awesome pattern! Do those chokes have wad strippers inside the choke or are they smooth?

The .640 will end in 640  the recommended choke for #7's is that F7CRP...

I called and talked to them.

I can confirm. You should probably call them. I had ordered the wrong choke tube. They don't have the TSS for #9's online, but they do have them in stock; Specifically for the Benelli Crio Plus.

This is very interesting.  I've never owned a Trulock choke but man they look nice (they don't stick out of the barrel 2") and they are very reasonably priced!

They were one of if not the best choke for shooting Federals flight control wad. I'm wondering if they worked with Federal early on to work up a choke for these new wads.

Either way it's got me curious.  Wondering how they will perform in the 20 with handloads...

I have the one for heavyweight 7s to try. You are welcome to it also.

I ordered both. The one for #7's and the one for #9's.. i'm still nervous about pulling the trigger on a .640 with 3.5" of TSS...

It does go against everything handloaders have experienced with TSS shells over the years. My gun preferred a more open choke with my handload. BUT the internals of the Federal TSS shells and the internals of these chokes clearly work well together in at least the OPs guns.

I'd still like to know what one of these chokes look like inside. If I remember right their chokes for the flight control wad were not ported and did not have wad strippers.

Those are some good numbers, I was wondering how those shells would perform. I've always been a Winchester LB fan but i may have to get a box and try those out in my gun.

Headed to the range shortly. Will report back. Indian Creek .665 comes in Monday. Will try that out as well.

POI impact is definitely high right. Haven't had a chance to count yet, but this is 40 yds off of a lead sled.

No choke expert but those choke constrictions seem like defeating the flight control wad to me?

All at 40 yards:
Trulock .650 - 290 pellets
Trulock .640 - 264 pellets
Kicks .665 - 255 pellets
Jelly Head .660 - 214 pellets

Thatll killem dead for sure!  Looks like your highest pattern of 290, is 36% of the load.  Did you count/look at 20 inch pattern?

Ive got a indian creek 675 im going to try in a couple weeks.

Mahifishn  - I don't  see how you got such low counts in the 10".  My SV with same choke and load averaged 100 more in the 10".  My M3500 did even better.  What was the temperature and wind?  I understand that every gun/choke/load combo will shoot different, but both my guns and both yours were way off.  It was 67 degrees the day I tested.

My #7 put up almost what your #9 did.  That's weird.

I run denatured alcohol and a boresnake through between every shot.  Are you cleaning between shots?

——-UPDATE——-

Today I shot 3" with my M1.  It put up more in the 10" than your 3.5" did.  Interesting.

And like the 12 gauge Heavyweight 7 loads, defeating the Flight Control Wad is what has to be done to make these loads pattern tight.

That jellyhead max doesn't suprise me one bit.  Ever since they went away from the original design,  those chokes have become just like any other avg choke with anything.

Not the numbers you'd expect/are paying for but will all kill turkeys. Be interesting to see how the Indian Creek does.

Much better. After looking at the picture I probably could've shifted the circle further right and picked up 10-15 more pellets. 350 is fine with me.

Will definitely work but looks like it's over choked. Some holes in that pattern.

I absolutely agree with you, gobble. I've spent enough messing around with the federal factory loads. Once I get the stuff in to handload my own I'll mess with it more and fine tune it. This season I'm just gonna roll with what I have. It's way better than any other factory stuff I have.

It's similar in evenness to the pattern I shot with a .665 Indian Creek and handloads. A .675 was much more even.

Just wanted to check back in to thank you Mahifishn and BigPimpn for directing me to these chokes. Followed the advice of you all and got the Trulock for No. 7 TSS.

Running the choke and No. 7 TSS through my SuperVinci I crushed it patterning out to 50 yards. Others were having to have a hard time and from the first shot to the last I was looking at one dead turkey.

This week I am headed out. Thank you guys for great advice. If I have a turkey in my sites and fail it will truly be a case of the Indian and not the arrow!!!
