Alright guys I done all I know to do at the moment can't wait to see the birds start coming in
If anybody has any suggestions on anything about our team threads and etc send me a pm and I can give you my phone# I have noticed some teams have banners I have no clue how to do that so anybody that does feel free to come up with something and we all can agree on one looking forward to this with . All of y'all
We still have 1 open spot if anybody knows somebody and hope all current team members confirms with me so I can finalize the roster and submit to administrators I see teams have co-captains be nice to have a couple but as long as we help each other out we can rock this contest I know we have novice hunters veteran hunters and two experienced excellent  call makers and probably a rookie or two but best of luck to everyone look forward to this and hope with this competition I can learn alot from y'all
Thank you nick

Sounds like a plan. How many are all of you allowed to kill. I hope I can tag out but it's not likely.. In AL we can take up to 5  spring gobblers. In MS a can take 3. That's hard to do in a  45 day season. If I get 5 between the 2 I will be happy.

I'll be hunting at least three states and tribal land. 3 in OK, 2 in KS ans 2 in MO. There is no bag limit on tribal land so in theory I could kill and kill and kill but I usually limit myself to one bird. So that's 8

3 is the max in illinois
i have thought about heading out of state for more fun, but the wife says our budget wont allow it  :( ;D
dang, didnt know you could get 5 in alabama. no wonder those guys dominate the team contest; thats a lot of chances to upgrade your bird's score

The only thing bad about it is our birds don't weight allot. The average longbeard will only weight around 14-15 lbs. 19-20lbs. is a big one.

wow, didnt realize that. must run themselves ragged chasin the ladies  :turkey2:
we've got fat, cornfed butterballs up here
most 2 year old toms are 22-23 pounds. i've shot a couple longbeards that weighed 26

One area I hunt in SE Oklahoma it's not uncommon for 3-4 year old toms to weight 17 -18 pounds but you might just as well kill a 22 pound bird out of the same area.

Dang I'm jealous. Here in indiana we can kill 1 bird and that's it. Last years bird went 24 lbs. 10.5" beard and right at about an inch spurs. (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/09/yqugereg.jpg)

I was playing around with the gobbler score calculator and my two birds from last year scored a 73 and 75 hopefully I can repeat that

My biggest was 66 last year, our birds down here lack big time in the weight category. I just hope I can take a few.
Title: Re: General discussion
Post by: Illini Tom on March 10, 2014, 09:38:03 AM
those are nice toms in anybody's book
weight obviously is important but each pound only counts 1 point. where scores really go through the roof are with multiple beard birds. total beard length is multiplied by 2 and spur length x 10.
as an example, here's how my best tom added up last year...
11.25 beard x 2 = 22.5 points
1.75 spurs x 2 =  3.5, then x 10 = 35 points
25.5 pounds = 25.5 points
nwft score = 83
i have seen multi-beard birds rack up 50-60 points on beard length alone

If I can just keep killing mature birds I'm happy.  Keep doing that all season and you'll end up killing a 70 pt+ tom.
Title: Re: General discussion
Post by: ericjames on March 10, 2014, 02:54:07 PM
That's the way I am I love to kill 4 year old birds. But I promise I will not hold back on a 2 year old. I will shoot a 2 year old faster than you can bat an eye.

had 1 good, 1 not so good scouting missions the last couple days
checked out my new spot monday afternoon and saw 7 toms. walked up on 2 longbeards along a ridge above a creek that i suspected to be a good roost spot and they just stood there, 25 yards away and i wasnt even wearing any camo.  :turkey2:
checked out my no. 1 place this morning where i have shot lots of toms and heard a crazy number of gobbles but nary a peep on my side of the creek. all the birds were still in a big winter flock about a quarter mile away on an outfitter property.
hopefully, they break up soon because this is my traditional opening day spot  :turkey:

Well, I shot my first bird with the Winchester longbeards today.. Looks like they done what they were suppose to do at 35 yards.

holy moly! yeah, i'd say they did the job
i almost bought a box of longbeards awhile back but the place i stopped at only had them in 4s and 6s, and i have always shot 5s though my gun, so i got xx 5s instead.
wish i had gotten the LB 6s  :fud:

Well I wanted the 5's also but they were sold out of them had 4 and 6 so that's why I got the 6's. Looking at some of these #on here I might try a box of 4's.

Wish I had something to report. :-\  Hunted Sunday in TN and didn't see or hear a bird.  Neither did 3 of my buddies.  One guy on the lease shot a jake that came into his decoys but he didn't hear any gobbling either.  This weekend I'll be in KY for the opener.  Fingers crossed.

yeah, it has been very quiet in here, but i think a lot of guys are going to be hunting soon
i start monday  :turkey2:
but i think it might be tough early based on scouting. i have been trying to keep tabs on several places and some days they gobble, other days no. weather-wise, its way behind schedule, woods are wide open, not a hint of green.
at least the winter flocks are starting to break up
still, its gonna be great to finally get back at em  :gobble:
Title: Re: General discussion

I have one bird on 3000 acres that's gobbling his butt off. I haven't heard anymore.. But he still has a pile of hens with him.. I think the next time I hunt him I am going to get up and run at the hens and scare them off as soon a they fly down. Then see if I can do anything with him. I called him away from them twice so far.. One time I called him into 55 yards and the other at 70. Both times I called him away from the hens with the haint.. Our woods are greening up about 2 weeks behind normal.

Need some setup help. Got to lease early and checked out a couple food plots. One had a ton of sign and I saw 5 hens there.  Another I checked out when I first got there had little sign. But on the way out there were 4 hens with a nice longbeard in tow. I watched all of them from a distance with binos and none were spooked off.
Which one should I sit in the AM?  We'll have lot of people here for opening day and want to stake my claim sooner than later.

i'd definitely set up on the plot where you saw the tom, if you dont try and roost him
a tom with his hens are likely in a daily routine and should show up close to that same location again

Y'all will get them.. We don't need but 4 but birds. It seems our turkeys are just now getting cranked up down here, I heard 7 this morning on a place I haven't been but once this year. I had him at 60 on a clear cut this morning and I  wouldn't take the shot. I think he might upgrade my bird if I can get him. I watched him walk off this morning with the binoculars looked like he had better spurs and I know his beard was better.

I've been hunting hard and long for the last two weekends 6 days total and have not yet been able to seal the deal.  Had one mid afternoon yesterday gobbling his head off and closing until a hawk with 50 crows in pursuit landed between me and him raising all kinds of hell.  Last weekend I setup on a field and had one fly down at the opposite end.  Was working my way but I didn't realize there were about 10 hens roosted right above me.  I never knew they were there.  I think they saw me raise the gun up and left the roost to the other side were the gobbler flew down.  They left and he followed.
I'll be headed out for a 4 day weekend Thursday.  I'm hoping to make a contribution to our score but this has been frustrating to say the least.

Make it happen Nick! Our youth day is tomorrow and season opens Monday. I will be after them all next week. I picked up a sweet shooting 11-87 day before yesterday, looks brand new, camo 26 " barrel, boy needed some cash so I bought for a sweet price.

I tried too but everything was working against me this morning bad weather set up on one first thing and he flew down the opposite way so had another gobbling but he had me pinned he was behind me couldn't move so he moved on then I was soak and wet so I went to the blind to get out of the rain and then the lone gobbler come through and locked up on at 75 yds and he set there for a hour strutting back and forth keep looking at my decoys but he seemed like he smelled a rat and moved in then a hour later came back through and didn't even look my way I don't know it was the most frustrating morning hunting I have ever had

Here's my bird from this weekend.  Hunting has been really slow for our area of KY.  This was confirmed to us this weekend by a couple of pros. :thanks:  Ran into David Hale and Harold Knight this weekend, they were hunting a farm next to us, and they said the ice and late spring has really made hunting tuff.  I was somewhat relieved to hear this as it just seemed we could do nothing right this year.  I've got a few more hunts planned and hopefully I can upgrade a little.

big congrats mrs. hill and mr. buck  :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:

after 3 hard hunting days with lots of action but no score, finally pulled the trigger on my second tom this morning.
3 year old that i thought was gonna weigh 25 pounds after the long walk back to the truck, but he only weighed 20.
just ran his numbers with a 9.5 beard and 1 1/16 spurs that puts him at 60.25, so no upgrade but i'll take him.
permit no. 3 starts thursday

Well had a great day, but no bird. I heard 6 different gobblers this morning, 3 singles and 3 in one bunch. I got to with in about 75 yards of the 3, and they would not budge. They were just up above me on the ridge and were blowing the tree tops out. A bad storm started moving in thunder, lightning and heavy rain. So the birds dropped over the other side of the ridge and I headed home. Never heard a gobble till about 8 am but after that they turned it on. Be after them again tomorrow, 100% chance of rain though.

Weather was really bad in mid tn this morning it was raining so hard that the bird I missed I lost sight of him two different times at 50 yds high winds and lighting and tornado warnings but all you guys in the path of this storm system be safe

I've found in the past that after a few days hunting it's best to give the birds some rest and try a new group of birds. As far as the deer if you need help let me know this fall ;)

I've been done since April 30 . All I can say is it has been fun, sorry I didn't get us a better scoring bird. Unfortunately, I hunted less this year than I have in a long time.  I  enjoyed hearing about all of the hunting trips and seeing all the kill pics.
