Just like the title says I'm interested in knowing what combos have been the most successful in the woods? Tj or Marlin.

I'll preface this by saying that I have talked to Marlin and other guys about calls made with the same woods sounding polar opposite from each other. I have on combo that I was telling another guy about and we agreed that we both really liked it. But when I told him that I loved the different sound it had, like a hen who had smoked 2 packs a day for funny years, he was really surprised. Same call that he played was clean young hen.
Now that I have said all of that, my all walnut and Hophornbeam and Blackgum fiddles from Marlin are just plain dynamite
Bloodwood over butternut
Marlin, Mora over walnut misfit and his Mora over walnut fiddle box and T J walnut over poplar fiddle box .. these are my 3 favorites , but all the ones i have from them both are just as good and killers..
Here is mine.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210202/01e62361d0170c8c8708aab4daafcd3f.jpg)

Butternut/Macassar (https://i.imgur.com/nAv19FY.jpg)
Ipe over Butternut
Deadliest has been TJ's all walnut. 3 out of 5 longbeards last spring were struck and finished with it, and it alone.
Deadliest of Marlins has been maccasar over butternut.

Ipe over Butternut
Played this combo off TJ's table at Unicoi last year, all I could say is that is a meat call!
Mac/Butternut has killed the most birds for me. They seem to really like Ipe/Butternut and Bloodwood/Butternut also.

This is true no matter who the callmaker is. Granted you are referencing TJ and Marlin, but any callmaker building with certain wood combos that work for them will very often get very different sound results from the same combo in 3 diff calls. It's wood! Now to a degree the callmaker can and usually does tune to enhance certain sound characteristics, but they will not profounding change what the tone of the wood inherently and naturally will offer.
It's hard to pick just one but if you like there fiddles I would highly recommend getting a longbox from them as well.
I had the pleasure of watching TJ sand an tune a couple fiddle boxes, I was in all . His ability to change the sound was amazing. I want to say it's a talent but it's a gift , the ability to hear the hen he's / you are looking for and producing that sound .

Sitting here now listening to clips Don sent me of his Fiddle Box in different combinations, have it down to 3 and am trying to get it down to one by tomorrow. Really torn between two in particular plus one I like but am not sure and whichever that ends up being will be with me opening day.

Best to mortgage everything and just buy all 3 , you will never be happy with yourself if you don't .. LOL... Yes it's just hard making that choice because all of his are so good and easy to run.

Only thing I have to mortgage is my ugliness and they won't give me much for that. I have to pick up a money order tomorrow or the day after. I will not tell you which I chose but it came down to an all walnut, a butternut mora or a butternut persimmon. Drove my company crazy listening to the 8 or so files he sent me and whittling them down to those three and then to two of them and then the final choice.
butternut/persimmon!

Mr. Watkins sent 9 sound files based on what I was looking for, ended up ordering 2, "not patiently" waiting for them to show up...
