I see a lot of this black wrapping at the end of strikers, what is it and the purpose?

I was literally scrolling down to ask this same question. I think I've only seen it on the Schaffer's, but I could be wrong. Placebo?

Jimmy likes it as a reference point, and also, it keeps some folks from gripping too tightly, which distorts the sound.
