Title: Wild or not??
Post by: Cowboy on May 10, 2021, 03:55:05 PM
Wife got this pic while horseback riding with her friends last week.  Public land and no nearby houses or farms? What so you all think? No other turkeys around either?? (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210510/d92fb2a1de4469400c2d955bcc65c6b2.jpg)

I wasn't able to enlarge the photo but turkey appears very light colored.
Looks like your wife took the picture from close range so I'm assuming
the turkey didn't run. Is that correct?

Could, and I say could, be a smoke phase bird. Here is a smoky hen that was with a jake here in GA.  Ran out in the road.

From what I can see in the picture I am going to say it's a wild color phased turkey.

It wasn't super close and it moved away from them.

Smokey phase hen.  Wild as can be. We had one around here a couple of years ago.

if they're sitting on a nest they'll hang tight much longer than otherwise

sunday we were morel hunting and my sister walked to within 20 feet of a hen before she split. 14 eggs
