guys just bought the wife a 870 composite, 20gauge with a 21in barrel..

she is going to shoot 2 3/4in shells (lead),cause that is what we have 5 differant brands to choose from as of now.... #5 shot 1oz and #6 shot in 1 1/8oz.. in winchester, remington and federal

any suggestion on what choke to start with to get the max out of these shells...., these are what i have to start playn with...

                    .550 ssx
                    .560 kicks
                    .572 undertaker  (nonported)

i know that are shots are going to be limited to 20-25yds and thats ok
with us, for now.....

thanks for all your support and direction, russ

Hey Russ,

I would definitely go with the SSX with that gun and those shells. In those lead shells, I'd also pick the Federals. That is a pretty good lead load, assuming it's the #6 shot. I don't think you'll see very good patterns with those #5 shot shells due to the very small payload and the fact that they just don't flow as well as the #6 shot.

Good luck with your patterning and please let us know what you find.

Thanks,
Clark

P.S. I'd also recommend that you make sure that magazine cap is tight. I recommend as tight as possible by hand and then 3 additional "clicks" with some padded pliers.

The chokes you have you will need to got the HTL.  Now think you will see better numbers with some changes but try what you got to see if it work for you.  The IC and SC is something to look into. 555 in IC 562 in SC
Tell us just how dead do you want them to be and we will see if we can get that for you.

Personally, I would not waste my time with lead shot in a 2 3/4 shell.  You are really limiting your range.   Based on all my 870 20 ga testing, I would go with a choke in the .570 to .555 range with Federals HW 2 3/4 #7's.  You should have a pretty deadly combo out to 30 yards.  The SSX does shoot pretty good in this combo as well.

thank you all for your time and your ideas....

i know that we limited in our distance with the 2 3/4 shells, but when
they are already paid for, i am going to try to make them work for
our fall season here in ohio.....

thanks for the suggestions in the other shells, will be switching to
some type of 3 inch for our spring season, as the gun will be drilld
tapd and mounted with a scope (witch is what she wants as of now)
so that will be the time to try other shell chioces....

thanks again for all your help and will let you know how our testn
goes.....russ

Rock54 what got to buy 2 3/4" shells? Just wondering. You maybe could go too .550 with the 2 3/4 #6 lead loads. I am going to test some lead loads soon in my daughter's and I 20 gauge 21" 870's. I will post some pictures for sure.

i have soooo many 2 3/4 shells because i hunt turkey with a

rem. 1100 lite,with a 28in barrel (it only takes 2 3/4 shells)

                    and has taken 10

turkeys out to 34paces....not bragin, lookd like 30yds to me...

so therefore the reason for haven these shell...

reason for the new gun purchase is wife is short and we ONLY

hunt turkeys out of a blind, cause she cant sit STILL...two people

in a blind with 2 chairs, bipod and such with a 28in gun is alot to

handle and the stock is too long for her to get a good sight picture...

not lookn for high numbers at all, just a good enough pattern to

drop a turkey out to 25yds

a 2-3/4" #6 shell with the right choke will take a turkey all day long at 30 yds
you don't have to have the "almighty"HTL shell to take a bird, they are not armor plated the last time I looked
it's not the harvest,it's the chase
