Gentlemen,

I am officially done. I went to PA today and didn't even hear a bird. Thank you Jim for taking care of the group and I am looking forward to next year!

Box Calls / Re: Long Box Question
Last post by paboxcall - Today at 04:10:47 PM
While several callmakers can tune their short box to kee-kee, most short boxes do not replicate that call well. Long box on the other hand will kee-kee easily, have a young hen, a jake yelp, and low on the rail a good gobbler yelp. It will hen cluck and gobbler cluck. It will cut and purr both soft and aggressive. A good long box will change tone depending on where your fingers grasp and hold the paddle's beaver tail.

All that, then go to the other rail and repeat with a another set of young hen/jake/gobbler talk. Lastly it will give a strong gobble.

A good boat paddle call is way more than just a "locator" call; if built and tuned it will cover long distance and handle all the up close calling, and everything in between. While it can get huge volume, its fully capable of ramping down, just like any call it takes practice to learn what, where, and how it runs as no two are exactly alike.

I ditched the vest and fanny packs and just carry a long box and/or mini boat in a Yoder holster, and a trumpet/cane Jordan on a lanyard. Never have I felt ill-equipped.

So I've been talking to get one from him for a few years. I got one recently from him that had been in the works for a while, but unfortunately at no fault of him or me, it had an issue that would have been hard to fix so I sent it back and Billy knew that I had a couple white calls from Permar and Buckner, so he offered to replace it with this one. I am very appreciative that he made this one for me, it's the only call I have from him currently but I couldn't be happier. He's a great guy and call maker.

Box Calls / Re: Long Box Question
Last post by Will - Today at 04:03:22 PM
In my opinion I can get better kee kee's out my long boxes. I can also get a great range of sounds out of the ones I own. I have a few that have great gobbler/jake yelps as well as young and old hen yelps, all in one box. That all depends on the call maker and wood combo. I probably use my long box as much if not more in the spring than my short boxes because I can add a quick kee or jake yelp to help draw the bird in. The gobbler/jake yelps I can get are crazy good. They give that nice honky course yelp.

It's over for me now. Pa. was great, lots of action but no luck. They were still talking and I had another almost.  A silent Tom snuck in on the back side and practically gobbled in my ear. He had me on lock down and I couldn't move or swing. This was the ending I expected lol. It was a great birdless season. Congrats again to all who contributed and helped make this great run. You all made it exciting when we pulled in front for a lil bit. This definitely motivated me. Thank you always to Captain JimBo for keeping it all together. Hopefully we can make it all happen again next season.
