Title: How do you glue feathers onto call?
Post by: catman529 on May 15, 2015, 05:40:22 PM
I'm having trouble with epoxy not being sticky enough and the feather pops up. Need a good way to glue hackle feathers into the call before laminating it with Pro Kote. Any advice?

I've never done it, but I would put the pro cote on it and let it dry some then simply lay the feather on it and then smooth it out with more pro cote.  Just a thought.

Get some U-40 Color Lock from MudHole. Apply the feathers wet, using just water. You may need to do only one feather at a time. With practice you can manage two, I'm not sure more would be possible. Once the feather(s) are positioned how you want apply a coat of Color Lock and let dry. I haven't done one of these recently but I think I put on the Color Lock while the feather was still wet from the water. One coat should do it but you can add a second if you think it needs it. Repeat the process adding one or two feathers at a time. Remember you are working in reverse, the first feathers you apply will be at the bottom of the stack. The Color Lock should give you a pretty good hold but you still need to handle the feather end of the call very delicately while wrapping. Once the feathers are in place I start a wrap of black thread slightly below them and wrap up to and over the feathers for a smooth transition. Once your wrapping is done apply your finish as usual.

I've got one that Gerry Bramblett made using pheasant feathers.

Good job on that one alloutdoors!

Thanks and good looking call. How do you get the feather to stick all the way around the call with water? I can't get them to stick with epoxy. I'm using the last 2-3 inch ends of the iridescent hackle right at the base of the tail fan.

First thing I do is lay down some medium CA glue, while it is still tacky, apply the feather. The glue will give you a little time to spread it out as needed Either let it dry naturally, or hit it with accelerator.
