I recently just got a rhino .660 for my 870 turkey/pred 21" barrel. got to shoot some sat morning and the patterns are not what I was expecting. Barrel has just been polished and deep cleaned and was bore snaked between each shot. My best was with 3.5 hevi 7s with 181 in 10" at 40. all shells I tried had some gaps in the pattern, nothing huge, just not uniform throughout. I was expecting much better numbers and density. I have never had this gun break 200 with a jellyhead orig .665, jelly head max .660, and now the rhino? not sure if I need tighter constriction or not? Any input appreciated.
I tried the following shells:
Mag blend 3.5"
Mag blend 3"
Hevi 6's 3.5"
Longbeard 6's 3.5"
try a 3" shell mag blend. might surprise you.
I tried the 3" MB as well, wanna say they were around 160's..
We've always had good luck with the .660 Jelly Head out of Rem 870's. BUT, the only ones I have patterned have 26" barrels. Hevi #7's were awesome out of those combos. You might need to choke it down a little more with that shorter barrel... I'm sure someone with that gun will chime in and give you some solid advice.
Good Luck!
Maybe your gun likes a dirty barrel.

This. Or it might like a little moremopen choke...
Maybe so, anybody shoot a jebs or kicks in .655 in these short barrels? I sure thought the hevi 7s would have put up some good numbers with the rhino.
Plenty of better chokes then the Rhino. Just because its expensive does not mean it will perform the best. Try an SSX. There is no reason that you can not get into the 200's with an 870.
My rhino didn't shoot worth a flip in my gun, sold it.
I shoot an .643 ssx in my 535 with a 20" barrel shooting hevi 3" 2oz #7's with my avg 10" being around 215-220. Also shot the LB 3" 1.75 #6's out a kicks gt .655 with very similar results. Only be difference was the LB's have almost no 20" ring where the 7's have a good even 20" ring. Thinking about trying the LB 6's out of my ssx...thoughts fellas? Might pick up some 2oz 6's just to compare to the 1.75oz 6's.
Give Rob a call at Gobbler Guns 877-251-9955 talk to him or Jonathon, they can hook you up with the last choke you will ever need!!!! :OGturkeyhead:
I've had the same problem over the years with 870's. Once I tried a kicks .655 my problems were over. Never had an 870 that wouldn't shoot very well with that choke.
I've got a .655 headed this way, hopefully I'll get to test it out this weekend if the rain ever quits! Thanks for the input
Strange that you are not getting better numbers. My 21" guns are only 3". And with the mag blends and hevi #7 they both do 230-250 through a .660 rhino.
I have the same gun and chokes and get similar results although yours is a tad better. Chasing 200 in factory ammo is harder than the internet makes it out. I am suspect of a lot of peoples measurements and facts based on the patterning I and others have done. I think my gun shoots great and is better than most. The only thing that gets me over 200 consistently are Nitro loads.
Call Rob or Jonathon @ Gobbler Guns 877-251-9955 and tell them what shell you are shooting and out of which gun and see if they will send you a choke.....now they did it for me,but I'm not sure ifn they do it anymore. They sent me a .660...negative ,then they sent me a .655....it was really good but I thought it could be better so they sent me a .650...$$$$MONEY$$$$ ....so I sent the other 2 back ,THEN PAID THEM,and got a damm fine set-up...they also lengthened & polished forcing cone in my gun. Benelli SBE2 24" bbl. H-13 3.5"-2.25oz.-#7 .....336 in a 10" circle @ 40yds. Proof is in the puddin' gentlemen. Hollar at me ifn you wanna see that target,I cant figure out how to upload it... :z-winnersmiley:
I have a Rem 11-87 with 21" barrel, I also have a Rhino .660. Nitros shoot in the 270's. You could save a little bit of money messing with chokes and spring for a box of 4X5X7 Nitros or their straight 7's and get some really good counts. Just my opinion. Just shot the gun 2 days ago with Winchester #6 Long Beards, the factory Remington Super Full shot in the low 200's consistently. The Rhino didn't like them and was putting them in the 150 range.
Ridge Rooster
Mine likes a dirty barrel and I believe shorter barrels like tighter chokes like .650 / .655. My 26" barrel likes a .660 the most
