Title: Decoys and positions
Post by: jbo225 on January 12, 2018, 09:27:24 PM
What type of decoy setup do yall normally run and how do yall position them? 2 hens and a jake?

I use a DSD jake and hen.
If I'm hunting with my crossbow I like to have them 20 yards slightly to my left and they are set as walking quartering to my left.

It varies. I have used them less and less over the last few years and my success has been going up. I do like hunting over decoys though. My favorite setup is a strutter with a hen in the breeding position. I like watching birds run in to die. If I'm hunting birds that have been hunted I don't normally put out more than just a hen. A gobbler will come in and face a gobbler decoy.

I set to the situation, depends on a lot of factors...

I have/use DSD's!!

Full Strut Tom
3/4 Strut Jake
Upright Hen
Feeding Hen
Leading Hen

If you are looking to start with decoys I always go to Upright hen first, second is Jake then add in a feeding hen. There is a learning curve to using decoys, I hunt a Strutter but you need to hunt him "right" and my last is the leading hen.

Times when I have them all out to times I don't use them at all... I have some "rules" I go by when I set, a lot to go into but here's a bit with it.

I only use an upright dsd hen when hunting fields. I like to keep them looking in the woods.

Gobble!....I have experienced the same. ..I'm  more successful without decoys.  Ive had several hang up over them and many quickly leave once they see them.  I didnt use them for yrs but started when i started filming to help cover my added movements.  But I'm thinking seriously about leaving them at home this year.  I use avian x dcoys and they look great but they have not made me more successful in most cases.  Just my observation and experience.

God Bless

I only use them if I'm hunting a field; 2 feeding hens and an upright hen.

There it is the first..."what decoys you run" question lol.
All the decoys I've seen have been stationary?

I know there's at least one that runs on a rc truck.

My favorite position is in the truck where they belong!!

In all seriousness, when I use one it's normally a single DSD hen.

I saw one in Ohio a few years ago that a guy was showing a bunch of people at a get together.  It was a robotic decoy with interchangeable heads.  I thought man, turkey hunting has really been dumbed down since I first started.  I think it was called Ace In The Hole.

No apology necessary,...I hear it is a sign of weakness, and these guys will go for the throat.   :TooFunny:
Besides, a lot of them "run" a call, or "play" a call when all they are doing is using a call, so I don't see why you can't "run" a decoy... :toothy9:
Personally, I "run" my decoys from one storage closet to the other when I am cleaning things out... :angel9:

With the right location you don't need a decoy. Be in a place were you can see the turkey coming but he can not see the hen that's calling until he's in shooting range, like around a corner or over a small rise in terrain.  Other than that I like 1 hen or a gobbler fan but I rarely use them and mostly wish I hadn't bothered to.
