Title: Quick ID on which side goes up on mouth calls.m
Post by: Danger DAve on July 27, 2019, 01:16:30 AM
Does anybody here put a marker on mouth calls to quickly determine which side goes up.  The tab ain't always visible and the tape ain't always marked with the logo of the producer.  I've noticed that Houndstooth calls have more aluminum visible on the part that goes down.  Maybe I'm over thing things.  I was thinking sharpy dot on the upside.

Longest reed goes up. The one that has the most significant cut in the latex.

The metal tab (i.e. bump) is another way to tell which way.

The bump goes up against the roof of your mouth.

Can't hurt right? I could see marking it so during the heat of the moment a quick glance gets the correct side up (or down).

Is that just for the mentioned maker? Most I have used say bump goes down.

If you use one often enough , you real don't have to look at them ... you can tell with your tongue ..

Some makers have bump on bottom, some on top. I prefer ones with a top bump, but as mentioned the reed length is usually the quickest visual tell.

100% agree. You get to a point where you just pop it in your mouth and flip it over inside your mouth if it feels "off".

Longest reed on top always.

In terms of how a call is supposed to be used, this is true all of the time.  However,...with some calls and some inexperienced callers, turning a call upside down can produce better sounds in rare cases.

Long-time mouth call users that have learned to control air flow will pretty much invariably run calls long-reed-up. For newer guys, use the call the way it sounds the best to you,...and the turkeys!  Again, as has been said, they are supposed to be run long-reed-up.   :icon_thumright:

As for the tab up or down question, I guess some guys that construct calls might build them such that the tab is on the same side (up) as the long reed.  I have never built any that way and I can't ever remember seeing one that was.  Could happen though, I suppose...

You're welcome, I honestly was not trying to correct you though, thought it may be something different from the maker you use.
