Title: How many hunting spots?
Post by: ThicketThrasher on February 06, 2011, 07:59:10 PM
How many hunting spots due you have? Not how many states are you gonna hunt in, but rather how many different places in your area do you hunt. Some guys have 1, some have a bunch. I have about 8 places that I am likely to hunt this season, 4 on private land and 4 on public. I will also explore some, and probably spend 2 or 3 days in brand new territory. How bout you guys?

Two public land spots and three or four private.  Trouble with the private is their small tracts.

My private land is also small tracts. That is one of the good things about public land-there is usually a lot of it.

4 regular spots mix between public and private, but I always like to explore new spots in national forest/public land. Great thing about public land is the amount of land you have access to.

One real large Public spot in MN it covers quite a few square miles, and that place has a whole lot of spots, I usually go to 4 or 5 during the 5 days.
In WI I have 6 or 7 spots all public.

I would say there is 20-30 individual small spots I monitor , a good area will have 5-6 spots that will hold gobblers. bigger areas have more spots - I have to cover large areas to monitor all of them ,  area knowledge and conditions plays a big factor.

As the season draws near I start to scout down areas , and round it down to a few - The best spots are not always the ones with the most gobblers , rather the areas that are most remote where there is zero hunter interference -I Avoid other hunters like the plague

We have 1 for sure private piece of land.  We had 3 before, but have lost 2 of them over the last few years.  There's a few spots we have been told we could hunt, but not too much has come out of it yet.

At least 5 different properties that I can just show up and hunt, more if I made a few calls.  My two best are good enough that I haven't really hunted anywhere else in the last 5 years though.

I have six main spots that I hunt nearby...all with in 30 min of home
I also have three spots that are near the Missouri border that I can hunt as well..and another near 800 acres on the east side of the state

There are a few areas that I have scouted when I've been flying..which is kinda cool...we will be on a flight and if I see birds on the ground...I quickly look at the GSP and write down the coodinates and take note of the closet town...I then go back later and try to find the landowner and see if he will let me hunt...It works pretty well and I've only had two people say no...only because they are a huntin it...pretty neat way to cover a lot of ground...plus I can look at the terraine and draws from above :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:

So far one area in Eastern WA with 6 or 8 lease properties that are private. Too wet and crowded over here in SW WA kind of like a pheasant drive shoulder to shoulder hence the long drive. Just starting so it will increase I am sure.

Only one property (club) with about 3500 acres. Mostly deer hunters in it but a few turkey hunters as well. Most are gone after the first weekend or two.

Behind my house butts up to Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois  and across the road is a friends big chunk of private land he raises cattle on..mostly pasture and it butts up to Shawnee. So just in walking distance from my house I have more places to hunt that I can.

Last time I counted acres I had a touch more than 5,000 in private farms in MN. That was 3 years ago. Now I'd guess about 6,500-7,000. I become friends with more and more farmers every year. It's not that hard when your always ready to catch calves, move cattle, or pick rock outta a field.

No private areas but about 50 spots on public lands. I live in central Louisiana with access to the Kisatchie National Forest, Fort Polk and Peason Ridge. Several good areas only 15 min. from my home.

Here in CO, I have thousands of acres of NF available to me, tough to narrow that down to a number of "spots".  So far I've hunted about 6 areas here, but even those can't be narrowed down to what I would consider a "spot".  The area I spent most of my time in last year will continue to be my go to area unless the number of birds or number of hunters changes.

Back home in IL, I have 5 or 6 private spots that I check regularly because they hold birds, but could bail out onto some other farms if a bird showed up there.  All of those spots have other local boys on them, so my rights aren't exclusive, and they aren't huge tracts of land.  Then I have the Shawnee NF which covers 280,000 acres, although I'm limited to the county my tag is drawn for.  Usually that is Pope and it probably has 1/3 of that within its boundaries.  I've been, at a minimum, through most of the areas, but my hunting is usually done in the southern region of it and I couldn't begin to narrow that to a "spot".  I'll hunt anywhere within its boundaries that I hear a turkey sound off weather I've been there before or not.

If you live anywhere near a national forest, and you claim to have only one spot..........your missing out on a lot of opportunity.
