Title: Help Me Choose a New Rifle Scope
Post by: WNCTracker on January 10, 2018, 07:45:49 AM
What would you choose and why?  I'm leaning one way I just want some more opinions.

1.  Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x44
2.  Leupold VX3i 3.5-10x40
3.  Nikon Monarch 3  3-10x42
4.  Meopta Meopro 3-9x40

Vortex. I've owned a few vortex scopes and the quality for the price is great. The warranty is top notch as well

I bought the leupold a couple months ago and really like it, also made in the USA. I had the same nikon you mentioned and really liked it also. I guess the leupold being made in the U.S was the deciding difference when I bought this time.

My question first is what kind of rifle are we scoping?  That will help in deciding what kind of scope. Just because you put a big scope on a rifle doesn't mean it's going to shoot any better, in my opinion you can over scope the gun... need more information

I like the vortex, although I have a nikon im also very happy with.

Never looked through a meopro so I can't comment on that scope

Leupold...made in america, excellent glass and warranty.  Most important to me is that Leupolds are usually shorter and lighter than other brands, especially Nikons.

2. Leupold and agree with the previous reasons.
As far as vortex I've only had one and it was a diamond back. At 12 power the magnification was not any better than a leupold 9 on a older Vari x11c. Clarity on the vortex  was good though as long as you have good light. Leupold, you can try the cds too and it's a lot of fun  to play with at the long distances.

Have you looked at any Burris scopes? I have the XTR 2 on my 6.5 and it's phenomenal.

Depends on your pocket book, either the Vortex, Leupold or nikon are all good scopes.. My first choose is the vortex , i have 2 pair of vortex binoculars that are great and a vortex scope blackdiamond 4 x 12 x 40 that's a good scope..i lost the covers to one of my pair of vortex binoculars and i called customer service and told them i lost the covers and wanted to purchase new covers, lady said we will have you new ones in the mail no charge. Great Service from Vortex ...

It kind of depends where and what you're hunting too.  I hunt deer in mostly heavy cover and the longest shot I ever took was a doe between the eyes at 198 yards.  I have Leupold VX iii  2.5 x 8 x 36 on my .308, .30-'06, TC .50 cal muzzleloader, and Ruger 77/22 Mag.  That size & power scope just works well for me.  I had a 3.5 x 10 x 50 on the '06 for a half of a season, but it was too bulky and threw the balance of the rifle off badly.  Plus, the extra weight was a P.I.T.A to carry long distances.  That 50 mm had great light gathering ability, but it had a wide profile on the rifle and seemed out of place.  Great for shooting off a bench, but not very handy in the woods.

If you were hunting out west or across big agricultural fields, you should go with a bigger glass. But if you're going to have to tote it through brush, hunt limited sight distances, and take long treks afield, a lighter weight, compact size may be your friend.

I used to sell Leupold scopes in a sports shop and they had an advertisement about a gun shop in Harrisburg, PA that flooded in Hurricane Agnes in 1973 where the entire stock of scopes was buried in mud and water for weeks.  Every brand of scope in the store failed from extended immersion, except for Leupold.  They had ZERO failure. That helped sell me on the brand.  Besides, their warranty backs them if there's an issue.  Made in USA too.  Win, win, win!

Jim

Good luck whatever you go with.

I run leupold on my deer rifle. It has been great and don't see it changing. Great scope that takes abuse and keeps going. That being said I put a vortex on my boys .308 and it has not needed touched after two years. It was dead nuts on when we checked it this fall. The optics quality seems to be as good as leupold and it holds a zero exceptionally as well.

I have several Leupold vx3 scopes. Last year  purchased two Vx6 scopes. Leaps and bounds better that the vx3. Keep your eyes open and you can find the original vx6 at good prices due to the HD vx line becoming available.

Keep your eyes open for the VX-3 CDS on sale.  I put one on my 300 win mag last year and I love it.  Crystal clear, no questions ask warranty, just sight it in at 200 with Federal Fusion ammo then you just dial the range of the animal, hold died on and shoot.  Picked up a 3.5x10x50 CDS for $399 plus a $30 rebate last March.

Vortex. I used to work behind the gun counter at dunams and one of the perks was getting my hands on all the scopes in the display case. I personally use nikon, but after looking at the vortex scopes, they are far better quality. The warranty is bad  as well.

Vortex is absolutely the one I'd recommend. Warranty is obviously as good as it can possibly get, but that Viper glass is also exceptional. I'm excited just thinking about it and may go look at one myself!

Vortex...american made, vet owned, best warranty. Even if you break the glass and it's your fault it's covered 100% and that warranty transfers. The other brands are good too but I like companies that stand behind their products.

I don't believe any of the scopes listed are American made except Leupold.  No arguing that Meopta  makes nice glass, but Leupold vx3/ vxiii is pretty darn nice glass.  I own at least one of each of the brands listed, and then some, but Leupold would be my first choice of those listed by a large margin.

I have a vx3i right now and want to go a different way on this purchase. The meopta interests me but climbing a tree a hundred times pulling a gun up a rope, walking rocky steep bluffs I think it's possible the viper warranty could prove it's worth.   Plus I can buy used with confidence.

Vortex American made ?
Maybe the Razor?  Last I read Japan, Philippines and China .
Veteran owners is a good thing though.

Vortex or meoptia. Vortex makes very good scopes and Tier 1 warranty.  Meoptia has the best glass of the bunch listed. Leupold is assembled in USA, some internals and all glass is imported.

Above I was corrected that Vortex was not made in America. I apologize that this wasn't 100% apparently. I had read some product education that said vortex was american made. Now I just researched more and found that previously the parts were imported then assembled in the US. And now some cheaper lines are supposedly built over seas. But I found another post that Vortex has moved production to the US. So I'm not sure now I'm gonna email them for clarification. I can't find current clarification on their website.

Everyone that you listed is a quality scope!!! I have Nikon, vortex,Leupold and Redfield . All are pretty good but it's hard to beat a Leupold awesome warranty and transferable to the new owner if you ever sell it , they hold their value.

I just had the opportunity to look through scopes at 300 yds on a dark rainy day. Trijicon - meopta/vortex Nikon . They are in order from best clarity /brightness to worst imo. Only thing was the Trijicon was a 30 mm tube. We also looked at meopta warranty which is lifetime and transferable just like leupold. He had a guy ruin his turrets on a new meopta. They called meopta and meopta told them to replace it right there for free so that's says something to me.

Been selling Leupold for close to 20 years now, never had to warranty one. Nightforce, US Optic, Zeiss (German not the chinese Zeiss) are also very good glass if one's budget can swing it.

Leupold gets my vote. I have 6 Leupolds on all of my rifles. There customer service is top notch and they make a superior durable product. I have put my scopes through some very rough and harsh conditions and they have never let me down.  I just purchased a Leupold spotting scope and so far so good with it as well.

Warranty Exclusions

Unfortunately, these warranties do not apply if the product has been modified, misused or has been damaged by accident, abuse, or misapplication. To ensure this doesn't happen to you, contact Leupold Product Service before having any work or repairs done to your valuable Leupold optics. Call 1-800-LEUPOLD or (503) 526-1400.

Warranty Products which are unclaimed after a period of one year may be subject to forfeiture.

This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state.

Also from their site. You gotta read the whole thing not just the bold headlines. When you read the exclusion the only thing left is manufacture defects. Vortex covers all of this plus any incident that is your fault. If I'm hunting and drop my rifle from the stand and crack the glass vortex will replace, leupold won't. If I tighten the rings to much and it causes an issue, vortex replaces leupold won't.

Leupold are probably great scopes too but you can't even compare the two warranties.

For me, the scope is about accuracy, durability and light transmission.
I glass the deer with binoculars to make the decision whether to shoot or not.
After that, the scope is to put the bullet where it needs to be every time, assuming me and the gun do our part.
Being able to see the crosshairs on target at last shooting light is critical.

My deer rifle had Leupold on it.

Was not deliberately damaged

What you need to do is go somewhere where you can put all the scopes on the same power and look out of them. Everybody's eyes are different and I never knew the difference in scopes until I did this. I went to bass pro shop in concord NC and they have an aquarium that is 100 yards from the scope display case. I had a salesman behind the counter lay all the scopes out I was interested in and put them all on same power and look out of them at a stuffed beaver on a log above the aquarium.

Everyone's eyes are different I even looked through scopes that were high dollar such as Zeiss, Swarovski, etc. I found out leupold glass to me is clearer but that is me. Vortex was clear but not as clear with my eyes. Zeiss was next. And the very high end Swarovski was very good but too much money for me.

I challenge you to go somewhere they have all the scopes and look through them and see why fits your eyes.

Since the original post I've been out of town a lot and as a bonus I have been able to get to a lot of stores to do this at cabelas, BPS, F&S, sportsmans warehouse, academy, and some locals. I did side by sides in the stores, 300 yards down roads at mid day, dusk, and  in overcast rain. I looked through so many but to look at ones in comparable $$ $400-$800 ish scopes:
leupold Vx3i, Vortex viper Hd, Bushnell elite, meopta meopro, Trijicon accupoint, Burris  veracity, ziess conquest , and Nikon monarch.

I'm not into bashing brands so for MY EYES in full daylight all were pretty sharp with the edge to zeiss and trijicon. The rest were pretty comparable but I'd say vortex, meopta, leupold, and Nikon were tied and my eyes couldn't really say which was really that much better. I'll say vortex really surprised me though. With bushnell next and last to Burris.

At low light which is what I was most concerned with not considering illuminated reticle, just ability to distinguish a shooter or not.
Zeiss was the clearest but very very very closely followed by meopta meopro. Then trijicon. Then vortex and leupold and Nikon. Then Burris and bushnell.

I chose the meopta. Right now the German reticle is on sale for $400 on sport optics and for being so comparable to ziess I felt like it was a steal.
