Title: Sound Clip - Just Messing Around
Post by: gergg on June 25, 2017, 05:54:28 PM
Trying to get better at trumpet playing, so I recorded myself out in the backyard woods which is a great way for me to learn. I am approximately 20 yards from my phone recorder, pointing/playing directly away from the phone into the thick woods. Feel free to offer your thoughts, good or bad, I think it can only help. I did call in some birds this year with this trumpet so I have a bit of confidence, but always looking to improve.

Sounds to me like your thinking about what you want to play to much instead of just playing. As you know practice, practice, and more practice..Also im not in anyway trying to be spiteful but helpful and just my opinion so take it for what it's worth....You'll get it down..

Good call, definitely thinking about things while recording, so much easier to call when alone in the woods....lol

Doesn't sound bad. My advice would be to just keep practicing and refine your sound. Try relaxing your lips a little to get a bit more rasp.

I hate trying to give advise on calling, but you asked :).   My opinion is worth what you paid for it.

It sounds choppy to me.  Like a pop pop pop instead of a steady controlled air flow Yeawk Yeawk Yeawk.  I'd practice air control, one long steady smooth air intake.  Once I had that steady high end draw "yeeeeeee" pretty good I'd practice dropping it off  to a "aawk".  Once I got comfortable with that I'd start practicing running it together and shortening it from a yeeeeeeee-aaaawk to a ye-awk.   Right now I'm hearing more of a yop yop yop.

I know that probably made zero sense, but it is worth the asking price ;D

Cut back on your air pressure, less is more. Draw from your diaphragm and not your throat.  You can kill birds now.

The first note of the yelp is a short kee and then drops off.  There should be a distinct two note sound with a rollover.  Some calls have a sharper rollover than others.  Internals varying.  Marlin Watkins videos on YouTube helped me greatly.  But Greg you can definitely kill a turkey with what you have going!

RELAX....

Don't force the sound....let your air draw & the timing of the call turn the note over.  :D
