Title: Late season hen?
Post by: AUHunter on May 02, 2011, 01:54:50 PM
I'm in southeast Alabama. Normally we start the season (March 15th) seeing large groups of hens which get smaller as the season progresses and I generally find hens nesting by the last week of the season. This year in two different areas I hunt, there was a drove of 12-15 hens at the start of the season. By the 3rd week of April both groups seemed to be gone and in the nesting stage. The last week of the season I saw 5-6 hens with gobblers fly up and roost together in the evening in both places. Why would this many hens be together and not on a nest this late in the season?

Thanks

AUHunter,

They had their nests broken up or were young hens.  Young hens nest latter than do adult hens.  Or they may be done with nesting.
