I've been working on some field grade scratch boxes this summer. Here's a video of the walnut that will be a field trial.

Mike, sounds good and like your on to something there.  Does the striker have slate on it?

The box and striker are walnut. I had just chalked it with gray chalk. It really does look like slate. Gonna try some other woods also.
