Well I think I'm hooked on learning to play a trumpet. I have a cocobolo from Mr. Mero and it's a blast. I have another maker in mind and I'm looking for suggestions and possibly pics for wood type. I like dark or grey looking wood. My wood knowledge is pretty limited to domestic woods. Right now I'm leaning toward African Blackwood but I just don't know many exotic woods.
lignum videt , Madagascar ebony, East Indian rosewood, desert ironwood, and Kingwood to name a few.
Desert ironwood is a favorite
ALL EXOTICS
MOST ALL DOMESTIC
Dark / grey - royal ebony

I like that royal ebony.
Is pink ivory a hard wood to obtain and is it extremely expensive?

Pink Ivory is available, though somewhat more rare than others. It tends to be a little more expensive on average.
You won't go wrong with Macassar ebony, African Blackwood or Desert Ironwood.
Agree with all the comments so far. Osage will darken with age but usually doesn't have the grain as some of the others
Desert Ironwood makes a great trumpet, but also Boise de rose, African blackwood, Brazilian rosewood, all are good choices.
Appreciate all the options, please post some pics if you want. I have got on one makers list and hoping to get on another.
My knowledge of the exotics is limited but slowly expanding. Is there any type that is a legitimate gray? I liked the royal ebony pic.
I should add I'm not as concerned with looks as sound. I want a variety of materials to include mouthpieces from some different makers. Kind of like tomorrow morning may start off with a Hooks and go to a Woodhaven. Even if the WoodHaven produces a kill, the next hunt could be a Gooserbat or
Primos.

Nice collection of calls.
I had a great conversation with the call maker today. I have narrowed my choices down to African Blackwood, Osage or Persimmon. I wasn't aware that Osage darkened up like it does. Needless to say I'm pretty excited to acquire another trumpet. My thoughts are it doesn't matter what choice I make on this trumpet because I've got a feeling I'm gonna end up having several.
I forgot to ask him about mud cured Osage, what's the difference between that and regular Osage?
A well built trumpet really won't make much difference in sound based on wood density. You can tell a little difference between persimmon and Blackwood but no overwhelming difference.
Thanks, I was just looking at a Janka Hardness chart. In my simple mind I figured the more dense the better.
By the way that walnut tube I got from you sounds great. Much better than the one I had.

Good assumption on the feeling you will end up owning several trumpets. Mud cured I assume started while using a fence post to make trumpets and when they got to the part that had been in the ground for a long time it t turned into a greenish tint in the wood.

Thanks you. Enjoy!
Basing good/bad on Hanks hardness is not always good.
