Title: 870 SPS
Post by: cjr1 on January 25, 2018, 06:10:14 PM
I'm sure this has been talked about before, but here goes.

Looking at getting a Remington 870 SPS. I notice they have them in both a 20" and 23" barrel. Has anyone noticed any difference in patterns?

I've been shooting an old 835 for too long to remember and just looking for a change. Plus, you can never have too many guns.

I have the 870 sps 20 inch barrel. I've gotten great patterns with my short barrel and love it for turkey hunting.

I also have the SPS with the 20" barrel. Shooting a .660 jelly head choke with 3.5" 2oz #5 long beard shells it put 205 hits in the 10" circle at 40 yards. Average around 195 hits but best was 205. Nice even patterns. Last year was my first year to carry it and I killed 3 gobblers with it. Very nice gun and I'm perfectly happy with the barrel length and the patterns it produces. 200 #5s in the 10 at 40 is pretty bad medicine. I think you'll enjoy the gun

Science says the long barrel will perform better if all else is equal. That said, with today's choke and shell options a 20" barrel will not prevent you from killing birds all day at 40 yards.

I have the 23" and get great patterns. To me the 20" is a little too short not for patterns but it makes the gun balance off imo. Pattern wise you probably won't see much difference 20-23" 26"-28" you probably would see a difference.

Thanks for all the response.

One other question. Do all the 870 SPS come drilled and tapped?

Don't know about the new ones I have an old 870 and I'd sooner put bells on my boots than a scope on a shotgun

My sps is the turkey/predator, with the sureshot stock and 20" barrel and it did come drilled and tapped. I can't speak for all sps 870s but that one does come drilled and tapped. Hope this helps.
