I used to use a hoot tube but it's hard to vary the tone like I can with my own voice. Here's a video of me using my voice to locate some birds one spring morning. There is some good gobbling later in the vid. So do any of you like to keep it simple and use your voice?

I have always had trouble with hoot tubes so about 3 years ago I dedicated to practicing enough to do it on my own.
Only drawback now is if it doesn't sound good I can't blame it on the call. ;D
Yep.
I did a spotted owl call last season and called up 3 enviromental protesters.
Thatal happen everytime paladin !!
I give it a try from time to time. Some mornings I believe you could holler HEY TURKEY! and get a responce.
I owl with voice, but also carry custom hooter. I usually hit em with a single hoowall
Yea, I get by, but sound more like a rooster than an owl at times.
i do but still have a call for those times when the sinus drainage is wrecking my throat
I hoot with my voice and also carry a Harrison hooter. Whatever I feel like that morning.
TRKYHTR
I use my voice to hoot and diaphragm or tube call to scream.
nope i just goose em :newmascot:
Yep same as others I can owl with my voice well but still carry a Harrison. I can yelp, crow and even squirrel bark with voice fairly acceptably for a short period of time but they all straign the throat pretty bad.
Yep...when my sinuses are clear. ;)

I've always used my voice, but you need a hoot tube in reserve for those hungover days. I have made a couple of pretty foul noises after too many drinks the night before.
I do... And I hoot up many owls to... When is owl season anyway
I used to hoot with my voice but then I got the harrison.
I use my voice , I am much louder than a call. I might not be able to tell which direction he is, but I can make one gobble.
Yup, it's more fun that way.
I have a Palmer's hoot tube but it's not very loud. I can do OK with my voice, it's just as loud and that's one less call to carry. Natural voice seems to work just as well if not better even though it's a bit less "owl sounding".
Yep, have for many years. Works for me.

It depends on the state you live in. They really aren't that good to eat, though. They are gamey like a Blue Heron, but not as bad as Bald Eagle. The legs have a lot of small bones..Just breast them out..Hope this helps..Mike :icon_thumright:
Seriously, I do hoot with my own voice, but as others, I do carry a Palmer..Mike
use my natural voice 99% of the time, have a harrison & a K&H but cant get the roll at the end to work like i can with my mouth, also use natural for volume
Only thing I hoot at with my own voice is the ladies, but I can owl hoot with other peoples voices :goofball:
Yes, I use my voice. It works, when they want to here it.
I have always used my own voice, and when the birds are in the mood, it really works.
BTW, if you want to hear owl hooting that will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, go to the NWTF national Owl hooting competition in Nashville. Most of those guys use their natural voice.
FullChoke
I grew up using my mouth for hootin.. It sounds better than any owl call I have tried. If owls are in the area I can usually get them cranked up and just sit back and listen.
That's the key right there. Owl or Crow only enough to get the birds in the area kicked off. Giving them a chance to start up on their own is usually best.
Thought that was the only way. Couldn't find hoot tubes when i started.
few years back working at night in an amusement park answered an owl and it came up and sit in a tree about 40 yds and visited about an hour. The turkeys don't cooperate that well for me. Get an answere now and then, but the last couple of years have been tight, didn't gobble much at all. :gobble: :gobble:
I do
I use my voice :icon_thumright:
I often use my own voice. Not because I'm good but simply because the turkeys don't care.
But I do carry one of Hooks owl calls and use it too
Any chance I can use the natural voice, I am smiling! With that said I sho' do love my james harrison owl hooter, it is SO much fun I take it as insurance!
Ya I started as soon as I got into turkey season. Even when I'm deer hunting if I hear a owl hoot I respond to it and get em all going by the time i'm done. Its a good change too on public land. Oh and laughing like an owl is my favorite to do in spring.
I hooted with my voice for years...never used a hoot tube.
I do. Not necessarily good at it but the owls love it! Turkeys will bite on it too!
Use my voice for all hooting and many times crow call as well. Back in 1963 I do not remember an owl call being available. Owls were more numerous back then. A crow call is more "natural" in my woods now. Love to hoot to owls on the river systems.
my wife had a ole' tom behind the house gobblin' his head off last spring..man she sounds just like a owl,,but she won't hunt ..needless to say, that ole big tom she located for me ,i took him on the other side of the ridge, cause she said don't take him behind the house please. lol...
Natural voice anymore, easier to vary the tone.
I can do a pretty good owl with voice. I have an Knight and Hale Owl locator that I carry. Got it years ago. Probably around 1993. They don't make em like this anymore. All the calls today cut off with alot of pressure. I can blow as hard as I can and doesn't cut off. Not even Knight and Hale make a Owl locator that won't cut off these days. I love using it because it is just so dang loud. I go with buddies and they can't get a response. I whip it out and it works almost every time. I crow call with mouth. Pretty good at it. I can call crows in during crow season when the Electronic Calls only draw them in to about 60 yrds. One overlooked locator is whistling a Rain Crow (Dove). I have had it work when nothing else will.
