Title: Beech for box calls
Post by: Alex870 on August 06, 2012, 07:44:59 PM
Hey everybody,
I came across some very dry beech with some cool grain and I picked it up and took it home.  Is beech any good for box calls? If so, what wood would make a good lid to go along with it?

I've never seen it used for a box but Billy Buice uses it for lids though I'm not sure which beech he uses.

The very first box I made was from German beechwood, it went to Pennsylvania and killed its first bird within 48 hours of getting there. Here is a pic of the call and bird....pappy

I haven't used it for the box yet, but I have 2 lids made from it now and I see no reason why they won't be great...nice tight grain, dense and straight grain too.
