Title: Testing the 870 Supermag........
Post by: mtaylor200 on February 25, 2014, 09:17:19 PM
i have a 870 Supermag with the thumbhole stock and short barrel. I have been swapping chokes around. trying to find something to really pull it together. It has turned into more of a game now to see how many shots to get in a 10" or 15" circle at 40 and 50 yards.

Today I shot it with the ventilator choke in using Heavy 13 #7 2 1/4oz.

I will make additional posts of the pictures from the 50 and 40 yard patterns. Any ideas or past experiences to help in the process would be greatly appreciated.

Get ahold of some of the older lower lot # starting with the number 2 or 3 and that will get way better yet.

Not to ruin your post, but I'll prove what I say to be true.

And this is only a 3" load of 7's with a 2 something lot #.  I'll have to show you the link since posting it here won't all show.

The 10" was 283 on this pattern from the cardboard backer.

I'll say that my guess is 90% of the time the bigger payload from the 3.5" shell will out shoot the 3" smaller payload from my findings.

good patterns....I have a 1187SM with a ventilator on it just dying to try some 3.5" H-13 #7's.

My 12ga M1 with 2oz loads and the ssx are putting up 280-300 consistently with h13 7's

Well I have never ran a 3.5" Hevi-13 #7 through a Ventilator since I only have a 3" 870.  I always figured that it would shoot very well.  But if what you say is true on the lot number, then I'm gonna tell you that the .655 is too tight for those loads.  It should do close to 300 shot in the 10" or more would be my guess with a great choke.  But that pattern will kill one all day and then some at 40yds.  You might want to go with a 3" shell later on and try that.

I was figuring on 300 too. Not sure what is happening. I am going to clean the barrel again tonight and wait for the weather to warm back up some. It dropped to the 30's and windy today. The pattern was low on those targets, I moved the red dot again but didn't have time to fire it. There are a ton of shot low on that target in the breast below the 10 ring. I thought that target was a 10 and 20 ring and bought them. the outer ring is 15.

I am going to put up new cardboard and look at the pattern before I put a target on there. I have a truglo choke and the HD choke that came with it. My next option is going to order a sumtoy I guess. I need to try all the other options first though. I haven't cleaned that barrel this year and have ran 2 boxes of HVY Mag Blend, 2 HVY 13 and a handful of other junk I had laying around.

Well that will make a difference.  I would only think that a shorter barrel will like a tighter choke.  So .655 shouldn't be too tight.  But that pattern looks pretty good really.  215 in a 10 with a 20" barrel is a pretty mean combo.

Yea I am confident with it now and was before. Now it has become a game to see what I can do with it. I had the forcing cone cut out last year now just trying to stretch it out as far as I can with the best pattern.

My next project is my sons Mossberg 500.  I have a HS turkey choke on it but don't like the pattern at all. His is a 20g.

My best results with 870sm/ventilator .655 were Win xx 3/2/6's and Hevi 7's 3/2/7's.
