Title: 11-87 what ammo/choke combo
Post by: Turkeydan on April 01, 2011, 01:54:26 PM
Hey Guys,
I just bought a new 11-87 Super Turkey mag 23"with a JH.665.  I have both H517T and Hevi #6 from Nitro. What chokes are you guys using for these loads? Thank you.

Recently bought the same exact gun, and tube, Jellyhead .665

So far I have shot some Hevi-13 3in. and 3.5 loads, after polishing my barrel.

Didn't get real good numbers, as many claim the gun likes the Jellyhead .660 better for Hevi-13?

My best at 40 yards in the 10in. circle with the Jellyhead .665, came from the 3.5in. 2 1/4oz. #6's with 204. I did manage more in the same shell in the 7's but only at 216, where it should have been way more than the 6's?  And for the 3 in. load 2oz. #7's only got 152? Not the most impressive numbers, but will work, but might try the Jellhead .660? But the best overall 20 in. even pattern did come from the 3in. 7's, just not high numbers in the 10 ring, but most of the shot was within the 20 ring.

The choke you have will do fine. If you have money to spend I would go with a Indian Creek .665

Puregold, Indian Creek, Rhino, Jelly Head, Kicks - your choice stay near .665

and remember most guys agree that anything close to 100 @ 40 yards in a 10" circle is acceptable for hunting.

I bought the same gun last year, I have the IC .665 and the JH .665.  The JH did just a little better in the 10 ring but only 5 to 10 more hits.  I bought the JH .660 and the SSX .643 to try this spring if this winter would just go away.  I'll post if it ever happens.

Thanks for the info. I will buy a .665 also. I will be curious to see how it handles the H-4x5x7 shells. On my 835 I use a Rhino .680 and man these triplex loads are deadly out to 65 yards. Do you think the .665 will be good for the H#6s? May 1st is coming to NY!!!

Turkey Dan,
Shooting the same (11-87, 3 1/2" Hevi 13, 2 1/4 #6) #7's illegal in NH. I shot 224 at 40, 114 @50, 92 at 60 in a 10" circle with the old Rem Hevi Shot tube (.665)in a dirty unpolished gun. There's a post here somewhere with a place to buy them for $9.95, for that cheap money it's worth a shot, no pun intended. BTW hunted Cherry Valley to Cobbleskill for 15 years, was turkey heaven!

I'll tell you one of the best chokes you can shoot for the Rem barrel guns and htl loads.  This has been the best shooting choke I have yet to test in my 870.  Your 11-87 should like it as well.  If I didn't already have this choke, I would jump all over that.  That .675 choke will actually out shoot my Indian Creek .669.  And that choke is made by Indian Creek.  You couldn't give me $100 for that choke that I have.

I was shooting the Hevi-13 #7's 3" 2oz loads in that choke by the way.

I put around 300 shot in the 10" with the good Hevi-13 loads that I had from early last year.

Even though I have recently had a falling out with EM and their Hevi-Shot loads, I will still go ahead and show you what the good shells could do with that choke on a 72 degree day.

I'll add I originally counted that pattern at 318 shot, but I recounted to eliminate for sure the snowman pellets that I may have counted as 2 shot.  But Some of those very well could have been 2 shot I might add.  So say 300 plus shot maybe in that pattern.  And that pattern was shot at a tape measured 40yds from tip of choke to cardboard and not stepped off or lasered just so you know.

I've shot the Hevi-13 3" 2oz #6's out of it and it only put about 170 with the loads I had in the 10".  I have yet to get the Hevi-13 6's to shoot very well out of any of my guns.  The 7's are a different story.  Nite and day difference.

ILIKEHEVI 13,
I hope NH makes #7's legal because I just bought that tube on Gun Brokers due to your glowing recommendation. I only shoot Hevi #6's but we'll see how it does. At $40 it was about half what Cabela's wanted for it, oh well, I've blown alot more than that on calls I'll never use!

Well find you a good old lot of those Hevi-13 7's or hopefully a good shooting lot of the newer 7's and you will see that choke sing.
