Hello there, I've been a lifelong fisherman and have always had an interest in hunting but never got the chance to take it on. Both of my grandfathers hunted but after their passing the tradition just died off in the family. Several years ago I took a hunters education course just to have the experience and the idea of going out has been on my mind ever since.
Can't put a finger on it, but something about wild turkeys is magical. I remember when I was 7 years old I saw my first one (a hen) dart across the road while fishing with my stepdad and always found them fascinating ever since. Every time I see one or a flock I find myself pulling over on the side of the road to watch them.
Figured this would be a great place to start if wanted to begin learning more about them and maybe even go hunting for them.

Nice. My stepdad is from Navarre, that's where I saw my first turkey. I'm in Canton. I hear NE Ohio has some of the best turkey populations in the state. I know I've had more of my sightings up here than anywhere else. Are there any decent public hunting grounds in this part of the state? I've got a buddy who goes down to Salt Fork and has seen a few birds but hasn't taken any. Whenever I went fishing/camping/golfing down there I didn't see or hear any.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes!
Thought I'd pop back in after 5 years, spent some time turkey hunting public over this time... and nothing. Spent a weeks worth of days absolutely hammering public last Spring and only had 3 gobble at me. After spending a few hours on a hill yelping back into the woods, I decided to head down and right as I got to the bottom I heard cutting and saw a hen standing at the top of the hill where I was at! As I was leaving a gobbler then ran across the road!
At another location I was strolling around yelping and an aggressive hen came from my left cutting sharply.
I started cutting back on my push button. She circled around me trying to find the other hen. As she passed to my right, I heard 2 toms gobble behind. A loud jet passed overhead and all the turkeys split, leaving me skunked yet again. Same thing for Fall, no turkeys.
Spring 24 is going to be the year, I'm determined to get my first bird!
Don't be afraid to ask questions as there are a lot of very knowledgeable people here with a lot of experience that will help you.
