Post by: Vaturkeyhntr on February 25, 2017, 08:46:17 AM
Went out this morning for the first time.  Heard 6 that were gobbling real good in the tree.  Couple birds gobbled a few times on the ground along with some hen talk right with them.

Went out agian this am - no Gobbles. However, driving down the road I seen a flock of Gobblers about 9 in all out in the open. Then farther along I glanced out in a feild and there must have been 40 Turkeys Gobblers were strutting and hens just doing their thing. Seems like they are still grouped up. Snow and cooler weather may slow them down this week end and hopefully the green up.

Out this am. Cold and very windy with snow flurrys. No gobbles. Now that winter has returned I think the action will slow back down.

I went out this morning and heard nothing on the farm. Got home and one Gobbled off the ridge behind the house. Its slow this year despite the warm weather in my opinion.

Eastern side of the state birds were cranked up this morning.  Heard three behind the house when I came home from work gobbling like it was opening morning.  Called around and others didn't hear a thing.

I went out this morning in central VA and did not hear a thing.  I have been scouting a broad area and have not been seeing much sign.  I am starting to think numbers may be way down in my area.

Out this morning in an area I know had birds, could hear some hens clucking in the trees and did not hear a gobble.  Seemed like a perfect morning.  Go figure.

Numbers are definitely down in my part of central Virginia (Louisa and Goochland). Hens haven't raised any poult to speak of for the past three years. It's starting to really show. This spring is going to be tough and next spring is going to be even worse. I'm hoping they will raise great this year and two springs from now will be much better.

I saw more stutters this past weekend than the amount of total turkeys I had seen since deer season went out. I heard a few birds gobble on the limb but nothing on the ground. I still believe the population has taken a hit with the poor weather during may the past three springs, but I'm more optimistic than I was last week at this time.

I totally agree numbers are way down, but think I have found enough to keep me busy.  I am hoping one side effect of low bird numbers will be to make the casual hunters quit even sooner than usual!

Been hearing a few, heard 6-7 this morning, but they all want to stay in the timber.  The particular spot I was hunting is a cow farm with mostly fields, and all the birds pitched down in the woods on the neighbors side.  Killed a nice bird on an old logging road last week back in the woods, seems those are the spots to be this season.

I've noticed birds hanging in the woods more then fields myself

Birds are staying in the woods. Have heard a few gobbles in am and an occasional in the  afternoon. Been my worst Va season in years. Changing strategies to woods hunting and ambushing by setting up in roost proximity.

Birds till gobbling but day to day.  I had two gobbling good on the roost this morning, as well a late morning bird I managed to call across a river.  Gobbled his head off.
