Bob
This is the general rule of thumb in selecting a call of any type. Most of us have a "best" sound in our head. When we hear a call reproduce that sound, we have found the call we want to use.
That said, I think the best call is the one that will cause a given gobbler to commit suicide on a given day. ;)
I have a large collection of box calls and my favorite calls were made by WI. call maker Jerry Zebro. Jerry's calls are reasonably priced and look second to none. He's a great guy and will work with you to get the sound you want out of a box call!
Jerry Zebro makes a great one that I think sounds like a turkey and won't break the bank. Here is a sound file of one of mine from him in the woods.

Two really greats for short boxes not mentioned yet are Ed Terefencko and Irving Whitt. Ed T's waiting list is substantial. Many times Whitt has boxes for sale at the ready and they are some of the very best.
Spring Creek Turkey Calls, one of the best box calls you can own. great sounding call
There's so many outstanding call makers out there who makes great calls... My favorite short boxes are made by Al and Josh Shoemaker (SS Custom Calls). I also really like my short boxes from Bob Harwell, Scott Witter, and Tim Bullock... My favorite long box is a cedar over butternut from Jeff McKamey (Twisting Creek Calls)
The *BEST Box Call* is one that brings birds to your gun barrel day after day or year after year consistently.
That call could be produced by any number of builders. As stated above it all depends on your liking the sound of it. If your not sure about the sound of it, then you won't play it with much enthusiasm, and your confidence isn't very high in that call.
That being said, it pays for you to try to get to a call show to play as many as you can to see what you like?
There are only two guys that I trust to build a box call that I don't have to hear to know that it has turkey in it. Harwell and Mann.
if you can wait until FEB. come to nashville i be in the Twisting Creek Calls booth and just go around and play all the box calls there. that what i do .. ALOT of very good people will be there selling there calls..
Jack Scott of Cochran, GA makes agreat long box call as well.
Mr. Albert Paul! :you_rock:
SO MANY TO CHOOSE IF YALL COULD ONLY HAVE ONE CUSTOM BOX WHO PLZ ??
I was looking for the same thing a while back and ended up with D. Marlin Watkins call. I am happy with it.
I doubt you will find a call that everyone will agree on. These members posted many good ones. Do some research on each call that was mentioned and come to your own conclusions. It will then be YOUR choice.
For the money, you cant beat Bob Harwell's box. I know he aint much to look at, but for some reason, women and hens find him irrestible :TooFunny:
Marlin Watkins also makes a fine box as well

That is a true statement for the buyer and the call maker. I like Mike Lapp, No Bull and Twisting Creek, Ed Terefencko, Scott Basehore to name a few. The key is to run some and listen for the sound of the hen that your use to hearing in the woods.
Noel Gonzales from Sequin,TX
The best thing to do is contact the callmakers you are interested in, i am sure any of them will play there calls for you...There are so many great box call makers, That is a tough decision, everyone has their favorite, but find one YOU like...happy hunting...
From my experience and I've played every call makers calls listed in this thread with the exception Mr. Cox and alot of call makers not mentioned including some champions at nationals. When considering paddle calls or short boxes Lamar Williams Steve Mann and Darrin Dawkins are in league of their own.
I have a Albert Paul box call that is the best call i own. You could not do wrong with one of his boxes. A real good gentleman to deal with.
All of these answers are right. Many fine callmakers listed here. A lot is going to depend on how well the one doing the playing can play a box call too. It has been my observation that you have to spend some time playing one in order to get everything out of it. To find the little sweet low key hen talk.

I agree, The callers experience in playing a call is important..But... with that said, A very wise Callmaker told me that if you pick up a call and have to manipulate it a certain way to get the sound you want then you have eliminated half of the people that can play the call...I have played lots of calls from alot of Callmakers...Champions and others, besides sound, Ease of play is very important, Just my opinion, Good luck,,lots of great choices out there.
Albert Paul and Larry Gresser from Prairie Calls.

I agree 100%
My #1 box at this point is a long box from Russell Beard (Beard Hunter Turkey Calls), I'd like to pick up a short box from Mr. Bob Harwell before spring as well if I have the extra money.
I've seen a lot of calls that look great that don't have a turkey sound anywhere in them, and that's one thing I would certainly look out for when buying a box call. This is why I prefer to run any box I can before I buy, because even two made of the same materials won't always sound the same.

Can not go wrong with box calls made from any of these guys you mentioned.
He isn't going to say so for obvious reasons, but Mr. ncturkey builds one heck of a great sounding and looking box call as well.
Do you guys considier David Halloran a "Custom" callmaker and what do you think of his boxes?

yes I consider him to be a custom callmaker. In my mind his boxes are just ok, not bad or terrible just average. He is getting better every year with the boxes though.
