Well, I've rounded out a group of a few grey skates that I'm very happy with. Looking to add a few new strikers that will excel on grey slate pots and thought I'd seek the sage advice of you folks. So if you could only have a couple strikers for grey slate what would you be carrying?
Cheers, Pete
Ipe and hickory come to mind right off. Oh and maybe persimmon.
Clay Townsend's snakewood with a persimmon top.
A well balanced one PEICE bloodwood
JLH just made me several strikers for my gray slates which I am extremely pleased with. I would suggest contacting Jeff.

David Halloran's one piece persimmon is by far my favorite for grey slate but I also really like Halloran's one piece bloodwood too.

My Ipe is one of his one piece strikers, man I love that thing.
Tulip poplar and ramin for soft talk, hickory all around striker for most situations.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone, really appreciate it!
Id have to ask what do you want your grey slate to sound like?
There are a bunch of options to get the sound youre looking to get out of that call.

X3 the snakewood persimmon and snakewood Osage clay Townsend strikers are awesome and sing on everything!
I've got a really nice sounding double-sided call with slate on one side, glass on the other, and a slate sounding board that sounds great with an applewood striker. It's my favorite combo to take in the woods. I bought the combo from a fellow from PA that makes them and was selling them at a gun show in my hometown on Beckley, WV a few years ago.
:z-guntootsmiley: I like Cedar on Gray slate and dymondwood for different sound more raspy, Cedar has a mellow up to a high pitch sound
Derrick Stuckey diamondwood and David Halloran one piece hickory sound great on my slates.
I like hickory, persimmon, black locust, bloodwood and purpleheart.
For a snappier, sharper sound and rollover ....dymondwood.
I really like Tulipwood, purple heart, and hickory on slate.

Cedar for sure, and black walnut is a close second.
