Why not just use a 20? Use the heavyweight 7 or hevi 7, get decent patterns and dense shot. 2 3/4 " available.  Used 2 3/4" 12 starting out in the 70's with 6 shot remington express high brass. WHY? because that is what was available then.

Yup, thats what I hunt with allot of the season. Beretta 390 20 guage/ Fed HW 7's. 170's in a 10 @ 40.
It's the best for kids and light to carry around for adults. The lighter 12g loads just helps as a transition from 20 guage to 12 guage for the kids. Other than that I see no reason to not shoot the quality turkey loads that are on the market. Allot of them are 1.00-1.50 a shot.

Some do not have the option of the 20 because they only own a 12 gauge perhaps.

When I was in high school my girlfriend at the time killed a jake at 20-25 yards with 7 1/2 dove loads and dropped it stone dead.  I think 30 yards would be the limit, maybe even 25, but if that's all I had I would not hesitate to load them up and choose a shot wisely.
