Slate, Suggestion What To Do With It

A family member knows that I make turkey calls gave me a 12" x 12" piece of slate that came from an old church floor. Any suggestions what to do with it? I do not know how to cut it into disks, easier to buy the disks already cut.

Make the little ones a chalkboard.

Cut it into strips and try your hand at making a trough call. Probably easier than cutting a round disk out of it.

Maybe try a scratch box that has the soundboard on one side and slate on the opposite side. It would probably take some playing around with, but the idea is a call that you could use as a scratch box and also as a "pot call" with a striker.

I tried it when I first started making calls.  Here's a few pointers if you feel you have to use it for a pot call...
Cut it outside with plenty of air circulation.  Slate creates a very fine dust that will stick with you if you breathe it. 
You can buy a tile cutting blade for a jigsaw (scroll saw) that will cut it fairly clean. 
You will likely need to split it to get a thickness that is usable.  This can be done with a fine chisel (made for stone, not wood) or even a stiff putty knife, etc.
As crazy as it sounds, you can make rough cuts on slate with heavy tin snips.

When it comes down to it, there is no way you are going to get as clean of a product as you will from Penn Big Bed Slate for about $1.50 a pop.  There is no way I would go back and try to cut my own again.

Guys thanks for the comments, I will stay with the Penn Big Bed Slate. I store it in the shop for a few years and probably end up pitching it.
