Student wants to make a pot call???

A student in my school wants to make a pot call and the shop teacher sent them to me for info.  I have never made one but know that there are many great makers here who are willing to help out.

We have access to a lathe and tools.  I believe that we also have access to some maple for the call.  The shop teacher has a few question for me to ask you guys. 

In general, how thick should the side walls be of the call? 

How deep should the call be from top to bottom?

Does the call need a sound board?

We are planning on getting slate for the surface.  Should we go 3", 3.25" or 3.5"?

I just watched one of Mike's videos and plan on forwarding them to the student for him to watch.  If you have any tips for this young man, please let me know.
