noisy box call that seems to sound like a flock of juvenile hens pecking their way through a wheat field

I've made a couple of grunters, pot calls and strikers with it. It's hard and very dense - or at least the apple I used was - so it's a chore to turn. Also there's a lot of internal stress on the wood, so it's really prone to cracking and warping even when it's dry. I would turn it to a thicker rough size, give it a couple of days, and then get it down to the final size after it settles. When I turned mine,  I was using knotty chunks from a firewood pile rather than milled boards though. All in all, it makes a classic looking call with a good sound that works great with metal surfaces. Fantastic striker wood too.
