I generally cut my stock about 7/8". I find that if I use a 1" thick blank to start with, I turn too thick of a striker overall. I like mine just a bit thinner. I also cut a 9" blank and finish near 7 1/2". When I turn dymondwood strikers, I use an 8" blank that is 3/4" thick. Try turning a 7 1/2" striker from an 8" blank. The skew gouge becomes your best friend.
